100% Habotai silk scarf is whisper light, soft, and comfortable to wear. It comes in two sizes, roughly 35” square or 42" square. It is colorful, and both sizes will compliment an outfit without overpowering it. You can choose to have the image lines diagonal on the scarf–which is how they are on the original quilt–or so that the image is square, with the image lines running parallel to the edges of the scarf.
•Not sure how to wear a scarf? Neither was I. I found this video very helpful.
Democracy Scarf Origin Story
I made this quilt during the summer of 2020, the first year of Covid, trying to use up scraps and keep myself sane. I love the resulting quilt, and it became the quilt for our bed. At the end of 2023, I was reading Heather Cox Richardson's book, Democracy Awakening which I bought at The Bookstore in Lenox, Massachusetts, while under the quilt I made in 2020. It wasn't until I was actually reading Democracy Awakening in bed that I realized that the book jacket and my quilt looked like they were related! They aren’t the same, but they rhyme. I didn't know about the book cover when I made the quilt in 2020, and as far as I know, the book cover designer, Nayon Cho, didn't know about my quilt when designing the cover.
I posted pictures of the quilt and book on my Facebook page and tagged Heather Cox Richardson. She saw the post and shared it on her Facebook page! She has millions of followers. I asked, and she gave me permission to tell this story here. I was stunned, delighted, and humbled by the feedback that community shared about my quilt. Many people wanted to know if I'd make a quilt for them, which was heart warming. I could never recreate the quilt, but all of the attention got me to thinking that the quilt would make a delicious scarf design; scarves are something I had never before considered designing. So here we are.
•I will be donating 10% of the profits from every Democracy scarf to The Civics Center, a nonpartisan group whose mission is to register high school students to vote. I'm a former teacher, the daughter of a long time history teacher, and a huge fan of Democracy. The right to vote and the awesome responsibility that comes with that right mean a lot to me.
•To reduce waste, I have each scarf printed to order. I will have it in the mail to you about a week after I receive your order.
